Subject: Ellis Island Passenger Lists Date: Fri, 1 Jun 2001 13:38:27 -0400 Hi Everyone, I have found 33 Haubens (17 females and 16 males) originally from Galicia who emigrated to the United States through Ellis Island and the Port of New York. The following is an excerpt from the Ellis Island website: www.ellisislandrecords.com The Ellis Island Archives <<...>> More than 22 million passengers and members of ships' crews entered the United States through Ellis Island and the Port of New York between 1892 and 1924. Information about each person was written down in ships' passenger lists, known as "manifests." Manifests were used to examine immigrants upon arrival in the United States. <<...>> Now you can search these millions of records for information on individual Ellis Island passengers. <<...>> The Passenger Record Archive <<...>> In the Passenger Record Archive, you'll find: * passenger records, giving passenger name, date of arrival, ship of travel, age on arrival, and more * original manifests, showing passenger names and other information * ship information, often with a picture, giving the history and background of each ship that brought the immigrants I have compiled the information I saw onto an Excel spreadsheet, which is attached to the bottom of this letter. In many cases the handwriting on the original manifests was very hard to read and contained many spelling mistakes. Unfortunately this caused the people who were inputting the names into the database to sometimes misread the name HAUBEN and so it ended up being misspelled in several cases. After I realized this I ended up deliberately misspelling the name and I found at least 6 more Haubens with mispelled surnames, some of these being the most important ones: Mickey's father - I found him under OSIAS HANBEN, and Jay's grandfather was under FEIWEL HAUBER. In the last column on the Excel spreadsheet I have added my comments about these misspellings because if any of you want to look up a particular person with a misspelled surname on the actual Ellis Island website you will NEED TO MISPELL THE NAME in order to find that person. I also corrected the spelling on all towns and villages as best as I could. For towns that most of us have probably never heard of I gave the distance in miles to either Przemysl, Strzyzow, Lvov or Wielkie Oczy - whichever was closest. If you want to print out the spreadsheet, I suggest to set your printer to "landscape" so it will print across the page. I printed it on 6 pages ( 8.5" x 11"). For those who do not have access to Excel files, Jay will be posting it soon onto his website. If anyone would like me to mail them a paper copy, I would be happy to do so. Please let me know.
