Higher Review -- August 16, 1996 -- Vinyl NYC

Higher at Vinyl last night was among the best times I've had at
that space. Previously I had only really been to HOME which was
not that fun for me usually. (Other than the key STC/Autechre show)

Got there fairly early to an empty house - with DJs spinning
boring house. Not to put the beginning DJs down, but I really did
not enjoy the music until Josh Wink went on. Nor did the rest of
the crowd - people were sitting except for a few of us trying to
dance and the one or two loonies or otherwise drunk dancing fools
whooping it up to any beat :)

I only wandered into the back room once to hear some drum and
bass, but didn't get to catch velocette I don't think.

In any case, sometime within the half hour between like 12:45 and
1:15 all of a sudden the place was packed and people dancing like
mad -- the vibe a good and happy one. The reason? As said before
- Josh Wink came on and spun the favorites. This is my first time
hearing him spin out - but it was definitily fun - acidy at
times, moody funk house at times, hip hop and a little electro -
along with a jungled trace (grrr - not remembering the title),
all to faster and faster and faster. nice :)

Next up was Laurent Garnier, doing some of his trancy house -
getting some loops in there which driving them crazy :) (Or
backspinning I guess.) Had to leave though and get some sleep on
the night.

Shout outs to a LARGE net crowd: Chris Green from Philly, Adam
Mackler, John Speakman, Tye, Spil/Rich, Chelle and Chris M,
Gopal, who am I forgetting (or who have I not met??) :)

Thanks Jason and and the pure children posse for a fab party!

(PS: John - no Wink returned to Winkism and didn't stay D&B very long...
Sort of like dabling in stuff - which is fun.)
